Day 2 of the 30 Day Minimalist Challenge.

I posed this question to my Facebook friends today ~ How many pillowcases does a family of four need?

I pondered this question while I was cleaning out my linen closet.

As you can see, my closet was filled to the brim. So full in fact, that the door wouldn’t close properly.

I tackled this closet today.

Perhaps I should have saved it for a day later in the month, when I’ll need to find 29 or 30 items to minimize, but saving it for later wasn’t an option. It needed to be done today.

It was actually pretty easy to go through and categorize where these items needed to go and what needed to stay.

So how many pillowcases does a family of four need. While my Facebook peeps say 2-3 per pillow. I was able to donate 14 pillowcases, and still have enough for my family. WHY? Why do we own so many pillowcases? I believe I may have uncovered the answer today while cleaning out that closet.

When I see something that I like, I buy it and add it to the collection and the collection continues to grow.

I seldom stop to ask myself whether we actually need it, because really, what’s one pretty pillowcase?

This may not pose a problem at first but what I realized tonight is if you don’t stop to get rid of the old ones every once in a while, that’s when clutter creeps in.

As of type this it seems so common sense, to get rid of what you don’t need or use. Perhaps that’s what makes it so hard, because it’s so easy.

I recently heard a phrase I am going to try to adopt.

“One in – one out”

Everytime you bring an item into your home, you must get rid of something else.

This would end the problem of overflowing closets and too many pillowcases.

Anyway, back to the closet.

I was able to find, are you ready for this, 57 items to donate, from the closet alone. THAT’S INSANE!!

Here is a picture of the donation pile.

Towels and blankets and sheets and candles and picture frames and God knows what else. All taking up space and serving no purpose. I even pulled a crib sheet out of there. My youngest is 8!!
At least it is done now. I am able to close the door, and everything in the closet has a place to be and a purpose in our home.

I even have an empty shelf ūüėä

I’ve asked on Facebook and I’ll ask on here. Please don’t judge me for my mess. I’m trying to change, and the reason I’m posting about it online is to hold myself accountable and hopefully inspire someone else to live a more purposeful life, starting with what we keep in our home.

Until next time,

Sarah

A New Month ~ A Challenge To You

**WARNING – This post contains some colourful language. Because sometimes, you just need to swear!

When I first came up with the website name “Changing Lives ~ Drop by Drop” my vision for this space was to bring change to those who are looking for something new. In the past, this was with information on essential oils, hence the drop by drop, but I also thought of the drop by drop as a comparable¬†to step by step, little by little. ¬†It is hard to change our lives all at once, but little by little we can make progress and when we look back, things are different, and if we have carefully chosen our path, they are better. I now feel the need to share my personal journey with you, a change I am making in my personal life. ¬†This journey is going to take a while, hopefully the rest of my life, and I hope that it may inspire you, or at the least, make you feel like you’re not alone.

If you are wondering if I will still be posting about essential oils, my answer is…of course. They are a part of my daily life, and I know I’m going to need them on this journey.

You may have noticed that things have been quiet over here on the blog over the past little while. I apologize for that, but there is a reason. ¬†I’ve become a tad bit fed up. Not with the blog, or with my oil business, but with my home life.

Now before you go jumping to conclusions, let me explain myself. I love my family, but I don’t love my home. It’s cluttered, and messy, and embarrassingly full of useless crap. ¬†Sure this crap had it’s purpose once upon a time, but that purpose has long since been forgotten. The stuff is still here, taking up space and making me anxious, upset, and irritable.

If you’re picturing a house from one of the hoarding shows on tv, it’s not that bad, but it’s definitely not what I feel comfortable in. For a long time I had stopped inviting people over because my house was always in a state of disaster. If I did, you know I’d be cleaning for hours to make it presentable. And heaven help me if someone was to pop in, I would feel the need to apologize profusely for the mess.

I had tried to not let it bother me, because I know that most people¬†don’t live in the picture perfect homes, with everything just so, but it does. I would really like a tidy home, but I really don’t want to clean all the time.¬†It drives me nuts that I feel like I’m constantly cleaning and every time I turn around there’s (pardon my language) SHIT¬†everywhere. Ahh!! Something needs to change.

Isn’t it funny how things show up in your life at the exact time you need them. ūüôā

The other day while listening to a podcast, I was re-introduced to a concept I had heard years ago but dismissed. Minimalism. Ever heard of it?

Before I had done any research on it I assumed it was something radical. Living with nothing but bare bones necessities, in one of those 200 square foot tiny homes. But that’s not really it.

The concept is to basically own only the items that you need and that bring you joy. Imagine that! Now that is sounding really attractive to me. Perhaps if I got rid of all of this useless shit that ends up all over the house, life wouldn’t be so crazy.

I brought this idea up to my husband, and he agreed. While he doesn’t think everything needs to go, he did agree that we own to much stuff and was open to the idea of a garage sale.

So…we had a garage sale last weekend.

garage sale 6 garage sale 5 garage sale 3 garage sale 2 garage sale 1

It was tons of work but we were able to sell a lot. The gentlemen who bought my sons old bike was planning on shipping it to Africa for the kids there. I can actually picture that Spiderman bike zipping around on the dirt roads in Africa, bringing so much joy to a child there.

When we were done, I dropped the¬†remainder off at The Salvation Army Thrift Store. ¬†I had planned on donating it to a local shelter, but there are rules, most won’t take if you have animals, so off to Sally Ann it went. My hope is that they use the proceeds in their shelters here in Winnipeg.

I still have a long way to go to get our home to how I would like it to be, but I am hoping that this website, and the following challenge will keep me inspired and committed to seeing this through.

Now onto The Challenge

30 Day Challenge

The 30 Day Minimalism Game. A game The Minimalists have created to help us get rid of our unneeded belongings.

A quote from their website –

We call it the 30-Day Minimalism Game.

Here’s how it works…

Find a friend or family member: someone who‚Äôs willing to get rid of their excess stuff.¬†This month, each of you must get rid of one thing¬†on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on.¬†Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc.¬†Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house‚ÄĒand out of your life‚ÄĒby midnight each day.

It’s an easy game at first. However, it starts getting challenging by week two when you’re both jettisoning more than a dozen items each day. Whoever can keep it going the longest wins; you both win if you can make it all month. Bonus points if you play with more than two people.

If you complete the challenge you will have removed 465 items from your home during the month. That is a lot. My husband doesn’t think it’s possible, but I’m going to try. I need to do this, and if you’re interested, I would love for you to join me.

If you are new to minimalism, you may wonder how getting rid of your belongings can help change your life. honestly I wonder that too sometimes, but the more I research, the more I want to give it a shot.

Some of the benefits that you are supposed to feel when you start to reduce the number of items you own are

  • less stress
  • your home is easier to clean
  • spend less
  • more freedom
  • being a good example for your children
  • find things easier
  • time for what you love

Now these are only a few of the benefits others have mentioned. If only some of these come true, my life will have improved a great deal.

Lovin’ My Bean Diffuser!

Ahh. I just wanted to share the joy a little bit. I purchased this beauty of a diffuser last month to use on my desk at work, and I’m LOVING it!!

Bean Diffuser

Work has been really busy, busier than it usually is at this time of year, and I have to admit that using this diffuser has really help keep me sane. ¬†If I’m feeling overwhelmed, I’ll usually add a few drops of the Grounding Blend, and it helps bring me back to the task at hand. Or if I’m cranky, because yeah, that does happen, I’ll add a couple drops of Wild Orange, just a little something to perk me up and make me happy. And it works.

It is super easy to use, just take off the lid, add some water and a few drops of oil, replace the lid and you’re all set! It really couldn’t be easier.

Another awesome thing is that it changes colour! Ahh, the beauty surrounds me ūüôā

This diffuser is great for my desk as it isn’t very powerful so I don’t get the whole office smelling, because SOME PEOPLE¬†DON’T LIKE SMELLS, or that’s what I’ve been told. Either way, I love them, and I hope you do too.

If you’re interested in purchasing this little guy, click on the picture below. It is an affiliate link, which means I’ll make a little commission off of your purchase. So thank you in advance!

If you’re interested in learning more about essential oils, head on over here,¬†to find out what I use. ¬†You can also find me on my Facebook Group – Changing Lives ~ Drop by Drop.

And here’s a little bit of joy from my home life. My boy picked me a bouquet of wild flowers while we were out on a walk at Bird’s Hill Park.

Aren’t they fabulous, and the kid in the background is pretty cute too ūüėČ

DIY Owie Spray – Relief for All of Your Skin Irritations

It’s almost a daily occurrence in my home that one of my children will come crying. They’ve fallen and scraped themselves, or cut themselves, or this or that. You get the idea. If you have kids I’m sure you can relate.

Now relate to this, you see the scrape needs to be cleaned out, but there is no getting anywhere near it. Not without the floodwaters opening and all hell breaking loose. My kids would rather run around with a pound of gravel in their knees than to have them cleaned out properly.

DIY – Super Easy All Natural Bug Repellent

Bugs! Aaah! They drive me crazy! There is nothing worse than trying to enjoy a peaceful evening outdoor a being attached by bugs. ¬†Here in Manitoba it’s the mosquitoes that you have to worry about. I’ve heard them referred to as large chickens because sometimes they get that big! I am excited to share my recipe for my All Natural Bug Repellent with you.

We went camping to Black Lake Provincial Campground on May Long Weekend which is in Nopiming Provincial Park. Nopiming is the Anishinabe word for ‚Äúentrance to the wilderness‚ÄĚ. ¬†It was our first time there and quickly became one of my favorite places.

Black Lake Campground

I’m So Excited!

I grew up in the country, and moved to the “big city” 17 years ago. Returning to the wilderness makes me feel at home. I love the smell, the peace and quite, the¬†openness, the slow pace, and the connection that you’re able to get when you’re out in the wilderness. If I had the chance I would move to the middle of no where in a heartbeat.

Sunset

Gorgeous Sunset

Anyway, back to the camping trip.  It took us just under 3 hours to get to Black Lake Campground, and when we were driving in, we new we were going to enjoy our weekend. We found our campsite and jumped out of the van, anxious to be back in nature.

13232966_10154062280381278_8452634320676297054_n

Our Campsite

Well, the second we opened the door we were swarmed by black flies. I mean swarmed! The in your face, up your nose, buzzing in your ears swarmed. Ugh. They had the potential to put a serious damper on our weekend.

We had brought bug spray, but honestly I would rather be eaten by bugs, then spray myself with it, especially when I’m camping and have to sleep in a tent. I hate the smell, I hate the feeling, and also the taste, cause you know when you spray it some of it will end up in your mouth.

Before we left I had made an all Natural Tick Repellent¬†to use on the dog while we were camping. Of course I brought my oils with me but since there was no wifi, and I didn’t have my oil books with me, I figured I would give the tick spray¬†a shot.

13240169_10154046050126278_4421059605895244832_n

Wouldn’t you know, IT WORKED! And not just a little bit it worked, like it really worked. I was so excited!! ¬† I found that we needed to reapply fairly often depending on what we were doing, but that was okay because it smelled fantastic! I actually felt good putting it on and the delicious scent was totally uplifting.

I now call it Bug-B-Gone, my All Natural Bug¬†Repellent.¬†Another reason I love it is because now I’m not spraying my children down with harmful chemicals. That’s a win in my books.

We had such a great weekend. We went exploring up the Ancient Mountains Self Guiding Trail, caught a fish for supper, and even the caribou left us a present!
