Fall is upon us and what a better way to stay warm than with 10% off Pink Pepper Oil. I wonder why they decided to call it Pink Pepper?

This beautiful oil has many uses. Looking for a quick pick me up? Or a relaxing massage? This oil has you covered.

An Update on my Goals and some NEWS!!!

It’s been about 2 weeks since I posted the 3 goals I wanted to work on over the next little while. You can check out this post to see in more detail, but to recap they were –

  • Eat a more plant-based diet (is that proper English, it sounds funny to me)
  • Move my body more
  • Clean up my house

Eat a more Plant-Based Diet – Well…..I guess I haven’t been doing too bad. I was doing very well for a while. I was packing plant-based lunches for work, adding more veggies to my dinner, and drinking more water. Aside from my morning coffee, all I drink is water. I know I could be doing better, but I’m working at it little by little in the hopes the small changes will stick and I will end up better of in the end. I find it incredibly frustrating…I want to eat plant-based, but I’m too lazy, or it’s too hard, or I don’t know enough to do it all the time. Whatever the issue is, I’m working on it.

Clean up my house…. You know if it would just stay clean it would be a lot easier to maintain. Gah! I’ve managed to sort out a few different areas, like my plastic container cupboard in my kitchen, and I went through my son’s clothes and was able to give my neighbour a few bags for her boys. It makes me happy to have someone I know who will make use of his old clothes. Yah this is a work in progress…….

Move my body more….. This is where the news comes in. I have been doing awesome in this area, so awesome in fact, that I signed up for my first Ultramarathon!!! It’s the Oxbow 50k to be held on May 4th!!

EEEK!! I am so excited, and nervous. I can’t wait. I had my eye on this race for a while now and was somewhat training for it. I made myself a deal…if my back to back long runs on the weekend went ok, I would sign up…

The training plan told me to run 25 kilometres on Saturday and 16 kilometres on Sunday. I cut my Saturday run a bit short and ran 22 k and then 18 k on Sunday. That was good enough for me. I came home and signed up. If I’m going to push myself to run that far, I need to have a reason for it.

This 50k is definitely outside of my comfort zone, and it is also something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, so I’m putting my insecurities aside and going to go for it.

Now I will leave you with a few questions……When is the last time you committed to something that would force you to grow? What have you always wanted to do, but haven’t taken the steps to start? What’s holding you back? Why not start now?

Well Hello There!

I stepped away for a while, but I’m back. You’re going to be seeing some changes around here. I plan on tweaking the site, updating it to reflect what is relevant in my life.

In the beginning, the focus of this website was to provide you with everything doTERRA.  All the latest news, upcoming events and tips and tricks. While I am still using doTERRA’s products on a daily basis, I found it very hard to continue on this path. I think the reason for this is because essential oils incorporate so easily into daily life, keeping the excitement is challenging. My focus has changed, and I am excited to be taking little steps in a new direction.

I’ve noticed throughout my life when I find a new attraction, or hobby, I go ALL IN! I cannot even tell you how many different hobbies I have gone through.  This is a great way to learn something but sustaining that motivation and momentum is tiring, especially if you aren’t seeing the results as fast as you’d like.

For the longest time, I was ashamed of this, embarrassed that I couldn’t stick with something. I’ve learned to accept that this is who I am and this is how I function. I am a curious human being, always seeking out the next adventure, the next experiment.

Who knows what the future holds exactly, all we can focus on is the present. Set goals, and take the necessary steps each day to attain them.

My goals for the next little while are –

  1. Eat a more plant-based diet
    • I will be trying to follow the new Canada Food Guide. If you haven’t seen it check it out! I cannot even explain how excited I am to see that Canadian officials are looking out for the people, instead of big business.
  2. Move my body more.
    • Over the past little while, I’ve started to feel old. I’m 37, not really old, but certainly not in my 20’s anymore. If I don’t take the time now to get my body into shape how am I going to feel when I’m 50 or 60.
  3. Clean up my house.
    • This is a never-ending struggle for me. We’ve lived in this house for 12 years, and for someone who changes hobbies more often than some people change their toothbrush, I’ve accumulated a ton of shit. Time to clean house.

I would love to be able to post my thoughts and progress here, if only it were that easy. I’ve been posting to Instagram lately, so if you want to keep in touch, come and find me here.

Until next time,

xoxo ~ Sarah

Constipation ~ A Shitty Situation

What do you do when you gotta go, but can’t. It’s the worst, isn’t it! Constipation isn’t something we talk openly about, but it does happen to each of us at one point or another.

I had typed out a bunch of the different symptoms of constipation, but decided to delete it. Something about talking about having to strain to get your shit out made me reconsider my post…I think if you’ve found your way here, you already know what’s going on and you’re looking for a way to get things moving again.

Here are a few natural remedies you can try to get relief of your constipation.

  1. Drink more water! Now this isn’t going to give you instant relief but it will certainly help to stop this from happening in the future.
  2. Eat more soluble fibre! Think nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, bran, barley, and peas, as well as some fruits and vegetables. They absorb water and form a gel-like paste, which will soften up your poop and improve it’s consistency.
  3. Eat Prunes! Grandma was right. Prunes can actually get things moving and may be more beneficial than fibre as they contain the natural laxative sorbitol. If you’re constipated, prunes could be the easiest natural solution available.
  4. Exercise more! I can almost guarantee any runner can recount one or more stories of making a pit stop in the woods. Exercise gets your digestive system working!!
  5. Drink Coffee! Coffee with caffeine also stimulates the digestive system.  Like we needed another reason to drink a cuppa joe.
  6. Probiotics can help! Studies have shown that people with chronic constipation have an imbalance of bacteria in their gut. A recent review found that probiotics seem to treat functional constipation by increasing the frequency of bowel movements and improving stool consistency. Check out my favourite brand here.
  7. Essential Oils to the rescue! There are many oils that can help, but I can personally vouch for a combination of Rosemary & Peppermint. Just rub 2 drops of each with some Fractionated Coconut Oil on your belly before bed. You should find some relief in the morning.

There are other solutions to this problem but the should be used as a last resort so I’ve decided to leave them off this list.

If this is an ongoing issue for you please contact your doctor so they can determine the underlying cause.

Constipation is no joke. A real shitty situation. I hope the above tips will help you get some relief.

Starting Small ~ The beginning of my Plant-Based Journey

Have you ever decided to change something in your life that’s holding you back, go gung-ho into it only to return to your previous ways after a few mishaps? Perhaps that is just the story of my life. For a long while I’ve been wanting to go plant-based but it never seems to last very long.

Back at the end of June decided that I was going to go plant-based vegan.  I did it for no other fact than I wanted to see how I felt eating a plant-based diet. I ate a strict vegan diet for an entire 2 weeks. Not nearly as long as I was planning. Ha.

My vegan diet ended shortly after summer arrived.  Along with summer comes barbeques, camping and all the great food that goes along with it. When we went camping I didn’t have the knowledge how to keep eating this way. I what can I say ~ old habits die hard.

It is now the beginning of December and again, I find myself thinking about the way I eat.  I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts that speak highly of a plant-based diet and can say that I know I would feel so much better if I was eating that way.

The problem is I don’t really know what to eat.

Most of the recipes I’ve found take a million ingredients, strange ingredients or take a long time to prepare.  I work a full-time job and have 2 kids to raise, so spending hours in the kitchen doesn’t really appeal to me. I needed to find a different way to start this new lifestyle.

I’ve come to realize that I have the personality that tends to overdo things at the beginning only to get bored or tired of it shortly after and give up on it. Living a healthy, active lifestyle is important to me. So I’ve decided to take it slow this time.

The Plan

Instead of eliminating so many different things from my diet all at once, I am simply going to add more nutritious food.

We all need to eat more plants people!

I plan on trying to eat more plant-based meals whenever I can.  It may be a fruit and greens filled smoothie for breakfast, or a new lentil dish for supper. It also means if I have the time and the energy to cook myself a separate meal after the family has been fed I will. But if I’m tired or we have plans I might end up eating the chicken fingers, and that’s gonna be ok for now.

I’ll mention that the members of my family have no interest in changing the way that they eat, and until I get this figured out I am not going anywhere near that fight.  I know that they will gain some benefit, and that’s enough for now.

I’m starting small. I’m starting with me.

Instead of working out every day, I am going to aim for 3-4 workouts a week.  This is different from what I’ve done in the past so keeping to a schedule like this is going to feel a lot different, but I’m hoping it will be more sustainable.

Since winter has come I have not wanted to get outside for a run and I can feel it in my body. I’m feeling a bit “fluffy” and I don’t like it one bit. I recently downloaded a workout app – 8fit to help me stay motivated in working out. I’m not sure where I heard about the app but I can say that I am enjoying it. (I’m not getting paid anything for this plug, just sharing what I’ve been trying lately).  It is a paid app – $79.00/year but the give you a 1-month trial, which I’m using now. I’m not sure yet if I will sign up for the year, but I’ll let you know if I do.

The workouts are pretty easy, and they are much shorter than I am used to. Today’s workout was a whole 9 minutes! I am hoping they will get harder and longer once I’ve been using it for a while.

I thought 8fit was only a workout app when I downloaded it, but it turns out there is a meal portion included too which I have been using a ton! It’s super customizable. You can set your preferences on what you want to eat – easy, vegetarian, pescetarian, vegan. You can also pick foods you don’t want your menu to include and you can tell it how long you want to spend in the kitchen.

I have got some super easy, pretty tasty and very healthy recipes out of it. My husband has been looking at me sideways some days when he sees what I make myself for supper.  Tonight I had smashed white beans on toast. Sure it wasn’t the most fabulous meal, but it’s was easy to make, filling, healthy and I didn’t feel weighed down afterward.

I’ve really been enjoying learning new, easy recipes to try. Going from a highly processed diet to plant-based overnight would be far too hard for me. I’m hoping by learning and incorporating these new recipes into my diet slowly I will gradually change the way I’m eating. To the point where I’m eating a plant-based vegan diet.  That is the goal anyway.

My plan is to share this journey with you because I know it is hard to go it alone. I’ll share my struggles, my triumphs, the new recipes I try, the workouts I’m doing, and how I’m feeling emotionally and physically. I’m hoping that by sharing my journey I’ll be more committed to stay with it and that I may even inspire someone to join me on this journey.

July Summer Update ~ Camping, Relaxing & the BEST Garage Sale Find Ever

Well hello, my lovelies. I hope your summer is off to a good start, and that you are taking in everything summer has to offer.  This summer my goal is to make more memories and spend more time with the people I care about that I don’t get to see as often as I’d like.

This summer my goal is to make more memories and spend more time with the people I care about that I don’t get to see as often as I’d like. Sometimes I think that we get caught up in keeping things as they should be that we lose out on the memories we could be making.  Laundry CAN wait. Dishes CAN sit in the sink overnight.

Lester Beach Overnight with Friends

My best friend from a million years ago and her husband recently purchased a cottage and invited us to spend Canada Day with them.  Canada Day is my favourite holiday and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with our close friends.

Their cottage is perfect. It’s not fancy and it’s not new but it feels like home. It’s cozy and inviting. The perfect place to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I am so excited for them and this new chapter in their lives.

The kids all played so well together and were busy doing a ton of different activities from swimming and kayaking, to riding around on quads. They had so much fun they didn’t want to leave.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of our time there. (I really got to get better at that)

Camping Trip #1 – Black Lake Provincial Park

We went camping as a family up to Black Lake Provincial Campground a few weekends ago.  This campground has a special place in my heart. It is so quiet and peaceful. A great place to go if you want to unplug for a few days and just relax.

Cell service is so scattered it’s best to say there is none, there are no amenities and the closest store is over 50km’s away.   It truly is secluded. Just what I like.

My hubby took this picture at 5am one morning while he was out fishing.

5 am on Black Lake

Breathtaking isn’t it 🙂

I was able to sneak away for a few hours with my dog and run the Black Lake Hiking Trail.  Trail running is one of my favourite things to do although I don’t get to run trails as often as I’d like. Rarely ever actually, but when I have the chance I’ll be out there.

Black Lake Hiking Trail Map

Being alone in the wilderness, running through the forest, climbing rocks, and trying to find the trail; this is pure bliss to me. As I type that I fully understand that not everyone would find that enjoyable, but I know my people are out there.

Like I mentioned, I brought my dog Abby along with me keep me company and protect me from the wild animals that I may encounter on the 9 km trail. Thankfully it was just me and her out there. She really is good company. She listens to all of my stories without complaint. She doesn’t whine or complain that she’s tired. Best of all she enjoys being out there just as much as I do.

The trail is marked by rock cairns so it can be a bit of an adventure trying to find your way sometimes. I only got somewhat lost a couple times. Ended up in the middle of the forest with no path to follow.  Turned around and quickly found my way again.

Black Lake Hiking Trail

Black Lake is located in the Canadian Shield which makes for some great rock climbing. At one point I was wondering how on earth I would make it back to camp if either myself or Abby were to get injured. Thankfully that didn’t happen.

The views were spectacular.

Black Lake

Black Lake

The bugs were not so lovely. Actually, they were horrendous, but I did manage to keep them at bay (for the most part) with my homemade Bug-B-Gone Insect Repellent.

If you are up for a stay in the wilderness and are comfortable with the fact that modern conveniences are over an hour away, I highly suggest you check out Black Lake Campground.

Camping Trip #2 – Stephenfield Provincial Park

Just last weekend my daughter and I left the boys at home and headed out to Stephenfield Provincial Park to spend the night with friends of ours.

Stephenfield Campground Sunset

Heading out for a night of camping without my husband isn’t something I would usually do.  I would definitely want to go, but I would end up staying home. It’s just easier that way.

This summer I am living for the experiences, the adventure of doing things out of the ordinary. So when your BFF who you don’t see nearly enough calls and invites you out for a night of camping, that is an experience I wasn’t about to pass up.

I am so glad we went. The kids had a blast playing in the sandhills, and at the beach and I filled my proverbial cup spending time with my friend.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a lot of pictures. Quality time to me means putting the phone/camera away and just enjoying where you are. I need to find a balance here because I realize pictures really do make these posts better.

The Best Garage Sale Find EVER!!

OMG. I still can’t believe it. I was out with the hubby checking out some garage sales last Saturday and you’ll never guess what I found.  Are you ready…

Vita-Mix Super 5000

A Vita-Mix Super 5000. Now here’s the best part.  Can you guess how much I paid considering they go for like $500 online……

Can you believe that?  Obviously, the lady had no idea what it was worth.  I feel a bit guilty but that’s why we go to garage sales right!

I think the reason why this has made me so incredibly giddy is that I had asked my husband for a Vita-Mix for my upcoming birthday. I’ve been trying to eat healthier and plant-based and a high-powered blender is almost a necessity.  Knowing that the retail price tag is WELL above our birthday limit I had thought I would be waiting forever!!

The only catch is that the Vita-Mix didn’t come with lids. I’ll be ordering new lids, or maybe a container in the next little bit but until then I’ve had to makeshift one out of my old blender lid and some cling wrap.  It’s not pretty but it works.

FIVE DOLLARS!!!  Sorry. I just can’t get over it.

This weekend we are off to spend some time at our friend’s cabin at Twin Beaches. So looking forward to getting away, relaxing, and visiting friends.

Do you have a favourite Vita-Mix recipe you would like to share? Or maybe you know of a great camping spot in Manitoba that we should check out. Please let me know in the comments below.
