National Running Day

Today is #NATIONALRUNNINGDAY

5 years ago I couldn’t run around the block but slowly I got better and could run farther. I remember the first time I ran 2km’s. I was so proud! And so sore. The pain goes away but that feeling stays with you for a lifetime.

Over the past five years, I’ve run over 3000km, including racing one half marathon and one full marathon. I ran every day for 432 days in temperatures ranging from +36 to -40.

One of my favourite, most memorable runs was during a total downpour. Nothing can clean your soul like a run in the rain.

Running has given me the strength to know that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.

Running gives me the courage to try new things.

It gives me time to myself to clear my head and process the day. I often have some of my great inspirations while out on the road.

Running consistently also allows me to pay less attention to the scale, keeping my body at a regular weight. I can eat what I want within reason.

Running also allows me to spend more time in nature, something I believe everyone needs to do in order to live a full, healthy life.

Yes, running can also suck the big one at times.

Sometimes my legs feel like lead and my lungs burn. Sometimes I run too far and have to call to get picked up.

Sometimes I fall and have to hobble home with scrapes and bruises, but you know what? It’s totally worth it! The feeling that comes after a good run makes up for all the shitty ones.
To those of you who say you want to run but can’t. I encourage you to just start. The hardest step is the first one out the door. 5 years from now you’ll be so grateful that you did.
Today is #nationalrunningday I encourage you to get out there and take a step in a new direction.

Did you get too much sun this weekend? Say good-bye to your sunburn…

Holy Hannah!! Mother Nature just flicked the switch on the seasons here in Winnipeg. I tell ya it is hawwt out!! How we can go from +7 to +36 Celcius in the span of a week is beyond me, but I’m not complaining. I love it!!  I love the heat, and the sun and everything that comes with it.  Well, almost everything. There is one thing I can do without, the sunburn.

We’ve all been there haven’t we..Enjoying your day out in the sun to only realize when you get home that you’re burnt to a crisp. There’s not a lot that you can do for relief at that point. A quick google search has showed me that people are using almost everything for sunburn relief….. Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, Oatmeal Bath, Tea Bags, Cucumbers, Yogurt or Milk.

Preventing is key really… Getting a good base tan at the beginning of the year by covering up enough, and using sunscreen when needed is very important.  I find that if I’m careful in the beginning, my tan will be just as nice and I lessen my chances of getting a nasty sunburn and hopefully reduce my risk of skin cancer.

But, that being said, there are still sometimes where I get too much sun. When that happens, I turn to this….

After Sun Soothing Spray

After Sun Soothing Spray

It’s perfect for when you’ve been out in the sun too long.  The cooling effects of the Peppermint will help reduce the heat in your skin, the Lavender and Tea Tree will help calm and address any skin issues.

If you have children who burn no matter how much sunscreen you apply, this recipe is for you.  It will help relieve the pain that’s associated with a sunburn allowing your children to settle down and get to sleep. We’ve all been there, haven’t we!

 After Sun Soothing Spray

Ingredients:

16-ounce glass spray bottle
1 cup Aloe Vera juice
1/4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E
8 drops Lavender Essential oil
8 drops Tea Tree Essential oil
8 drops Peppermint Essential oil

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake to combine and before each use.

And that’s it. Super easy, super effective, all natural After Sun Soothing Spray.

If you’ve been outside enjoying the sun you may have also been dealing with bugs.  Check out this post to learn how to make an all-natural bug repellent using only 2 essential oils!!

Until next time – Enjoy the Sun!!

I cannot stress this enough – Taking time for ourselves is so important!!  Very often it’s overlooked this time of year, as we’re running the kids from activity to activity, or trying to get our yard work caught up, cramming for exams and end of school tests.

Life has a tendency to get hectic if we aren’t careful, doesn’t it?  Taking a few minutes to fill your diffuser and a few deep breaths of the mist is all that’s needed to regain the clarity and calmness that we all so desperately require.

Whether it’s a Picnic in the Mountains you’re after, or a drive down the California Cost these diffuser blends will surely perk you up and transform your mood.

Where is your diffuser taking you today? Let me know in the comments below.

Garden Update – May Long Weekend Recap

Hello, my Pretties!  I hope you had a fabulous long weekend. May Long is one of my favourites!

Usually, we hit the road on Friday afternoon to make our way into the wilderness for the weekend.  May Long camping is just the recharge I need after a long Winnipeg winter.  Time to kick back and relax under the stars.

This is a picture from our trip up to Black Lake Provincial Park last May Long Weekend. This camping trip was one of the best yet. We tried out Black Lake for the first time and loved it. It’s so secluded and peaceful. The hiking trails are awesome and they provide free firewood. Can’t get much better than that.

Black Lake 2016

While the thought of spending time in nature was really compelling, the thought of getting everything ready, packing the van, driving for hours, setting up camp, and tearing down to come home was not. Nevermind the tick outbreak that has hit the province this year. These people pulled over 400 ticks off of them in one weekend!! No thank you.  Even with my homemade bug repellent, I would still be leery.

Needless to say, we decided to stick close to home.

How much nothing can a person do in one weekend?

A lot!  It was great!!

We hung out with friends on Friday night. Had a fire and some drinks.  Good times with good friends make for a very lazy day on Saturday. *wink *wink. The rain outside didn’t help. We ended up lazing around the house all day watching movies and such. Not exactly the most productive day, but hey, we all need those days sometimes.

Sunday wasn’t much better. The pissing rain outside sure knows how to put a damper on plans. I had been wanting to get my garden in this weekend, but nope. Thanks a lot, Mother Nature!

On Monday I decided that I had had enough of moping around inside.

Rain or shine, I was going to plant my garden.

Last year I experimented with planting by the moon, the way the Farmer’s Almanac says. Basically, you plant your root veggies after the full moon and the veggies that bear fruit above ground, after the new moon.

Moon Phases

I tried this out last year and had some success. Before my carrots would be all tops but last year they were awesome!!! I don’t want to mess with the system, so I’ll be planting with the moon again this year, well kinda.

Living in the city means I don’t have a tremendous amount of space to plant a garden.  We have a raised bed in the backyard that gets a lot of shade thanks to our huge Silver Birch tree. This is where I plant our greens. Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Onions, Radishes, etc.

I was excited to see that the spinach I planted last week is starting to grow.

The first thing I planted in the garden was my onions. I haven’t had much success in past years growing onions, but I really want to figure this out, so in they go again.  I researched a bit and one thing I learned that you don’t want to plant them too deep and they need loose sandy soil.  In order to grow big onions, only 1/3 of the bulb needs to be underground.  Well – this changes everything.  I planted 3 rows in the back garden and one row in the front in order to compare how they grow.

Onions

This was before I covered them up. I was sure to leave the soil as loose and airy as I could. Fingers crossed these SOB’s grow!!  If you have any onion growing tips I would LOVE to hear it!!

Up next was another batch of spinach.  I bought some Organic Spinach Seed tape to try out this year. I’ve never used seed tape before and I was pleasantly surprised. It made it super easy to plant.  The instructions were to create a trough for the tape, lay it flat, water the tape, cover with soil, and water again.  I found that when I watered it the first time most of it got covered up with soil saving me a step. It was really easy, I just wonder how the tape will break down in the soil.  I’ll keep you posted on that.

Planting the Garden in the rain

I planted some Swiss Chard and then some lettuce.   The spacing instructions on the Chard were 1″ apart when planting, thin to 10″.   I started by laying out my seeds 1″ apart, I did one row up and one across. After that I just sort of sprinkled them all over where they were to be planted. Who has time to plant like that, and does it really matter?  Really??  I guess we’ll see when this all starts to grow.

Planting lettuce is the same! The seeds are so thin and light. You just gotta throw that shit down and mix it in hoping it gets relatively easily spaced. Am I right?!

I can almost see my mother cringing as I write this. I remember planting the garden back home. Everything in neat rows, evenly spaced, ever. so. careful. Not this girl.  Not today anyway!

Here is how my garden looks after planting. Not to exciting. I still have some empty space there between the two tools.  I’m planning on planting beans there next week, after the new moon.  At the very bottom of the picture, I have my two (new) strawberry plants, mulched with wood shavings from my husbands wood shop.  I have read that deep mulching your garden is fabulous for weed control. I’m hoping these wood shavings will do the trick.  I think I might mulch the entire garden once the plants start growing.

The Garden is almost done

My front garden bed isn’t very exciting to look at now. I managed to get my carrots, beets and one row of onions planted.  The rest of the space will be for tomatoes.

That’s the update on the garden for this week….Hopefully, by the next update, I’ll have planted my tomatoes and cucumbers.

How about you? What are you planting in your garden this year?

Spring Cleaning with Essential Oils

The start of Spring always fills our home with excitement. After being cooped up inside for months the kids can get outside and release the pent up energy that’s been brewing for months.  I eagerly anticipate the days where I can get my hands dirty in my garden.  There is something about digging in the garden that is food for the soul. Wouldn’t you agree?  Unfortunately, until all of the snow melts and the soil warms up the only dirt I will be dealing with is that which I encounter while doing my Spring cleaning.

It’s quite mind boggling how much dirt and grime can accumulate over the winter months.  I am thankful that this Spring I have my essential oils to turn to. They help me cut through the grease and grime naturally, and leave my home fresh and clean and smelling great.

9 Spring Cleaning Tips with Essential Oils

1. Microwave—Microwaves are notorious for being tough to clean, especially after mishaps involving spaghetti sauce or tomato soup. To ease the pain of cleaning, simply microwave a cup filled with water and a few drops of Lemon, then wipe clean!  Check out this post to see how effective it really is.

2. Dishwasher—When is the last time you cleaned your dishwasher?  Pour distilled vinegar into a dish and add 5–10 drops of Lemon oil. Place this dish in your empty dishwasher and run on high.

3. Stove Top & Appliances—Lemon oil makes cleaning some of the dirtiest areas of the kitchen easy. Add vinegar, water, and Lemon to a spray bottle, and watch the grime disappear!

4. Ceiling Fan—Fan blades collect dust at turbo speeds and cling to them for as long as you let them. To avoid choking on dust bunnies while cleaning your ceiling fans, spray the inside of an old pillow case with a Lemon/water mixture and loop the fabric around each blade.

5. Washing Machine—Run a mixture of Lemon oil, baking soda, vinegar, and water through your empty machine on the hottest setting to break up dirt build-up and mildew. Scrub any excess with a sponge, then run the machine again with fresh water.

6. Trash Cans—Regularly cleaning out trash cans can eliminate odor. For indoor trash cans, spray the inside and outside of each can with a mixture of water, Lemon oil, and vinegar, then scrub with a sponge.  After your trash can is clean, put a folded newspaper at the bottom and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the newspaper.  This will keep your trash can smelling great.  My favourite oil to use is Purify. This oil will keep the odours at bay and will leave you smiling every time you have to take out the trash.

7. Windows and Windowsills—The same mixture of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar in a spray bottle that you’ve been using all around the house will do wonders for your windows and windowsills. Simply spray glass and wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel, finally move onto ledges and sills with a toothbrush or damp sponge.

8. Air Vents—One of the most overlooked areas to keep clean in your home is the air you breathe! Clean vents with a sponge dipped in warm water, vinegar, and Lemon oil. This will help eliminate allergens and dust from filling the air around you.

9. Wood Furniture – Keeping your wood furniture in pristine condition requires polishing it every few months.  You can create your own polish by combining 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar and 10 drops of doTERRA essential oil (Wild Orange, Arborvitae or Lemon) in an 8-ounce spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Apply to a microfiber cloth and wipe down surfaces to keep your wood furniture looking its best.

Cure for a Stinky Yoga Mat

Have you ever been here before?  Your yoga session starts out, you’re in the groove, thoughts are melting away and you’re at peace with the world. Ahhh.  Up next is Cobra. Now you’re belly down on your mat in Cobra and what in the hell is that smell? It’s your stinky yoga mat. Then you hope no one else can smell it. Not exactly what should be going on in your mind when you’re in the middle of your vinyasa.

Stinky Yoga Mat? Your 8 drop recipe to get rid of the stink so you can relax and recharge

Yes, yoga mats can get nasty, but cleaning them doesn’t have to be.  You “could” use your standard household cleaner, but how are you going to feel when you get a whiff of that?

I love this spray that you can make at home, using two very common essential oils.  Tea Tree and Lavender.  Both oils have cleansing properties, so you’ll be disinfecting your mat. The lavender oil will help you relax, and help you”get into it”.

 Yoga Mat Cleansing Spray

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 cup alcohol-free witch hazel or white vinegar
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Tea Tree/ Melaleuca essential oil
  • Glass spray bottle

Note: Not all yoga mats are treated the same. Using essential oils may ruin some yoga mats. Spray a test patch on a small part of your mat first to make sure it doesn’t affect it.

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake until combined.
  3. To use, spray on mat and wipe dry with towel.

Easy Peasy!!

If you would like to incorporate more oils into your session here are a few examples that can help bring a new level of awareness to your practice.

  • Apply InTune® at the beginning of class to help set your focus.
  • Rub a drop of doTERRA Breathe® on your chest.
  • For a more invigorating practice, diffuse Wild Orange and Peppermint.
  • Diffuse doTERRA Serenity® for a more calming practice.
  • Apply a drop of Frankincense or Sandalwood to your temples during meditation to help you relax and reduce stress.
  • Apply doTERRA Balance® to the back of your neck during Savasana to help with relaxation.

This article, from Adabelle Carson, doTERRA Diamond will give you many different options of oils to use during your yoga practice.

What are your favourite essential oils to use during your yoga practice?

Namaste.
